KK hostage situation: Victim released, man surrenders

KOTA KINABALU: The two-hour hostage situation in Damai Luyang here came to a dramatic end, as police managed to rescue the woman who was held at knifepoint.

After hours of negotiation, the knife wielding man finally let his victim go and surrendered himself to the police at 9.50pm.

Acting district police chief Superintendant George Abd Rakman said the situation was tense but no gunshot was fired by the police.

"We apprehended the man immediately. He is 27-years-old, but has no identifying documents.

"We have also seized a knife, which is about six inches long," he told reporters when met at the scene.

The woman who was taken hostage believed to have sustained minor cuts had been sent to the hospital for treatment.

Before the standoff, George explained that the man had tried to break into a house at Taman Istimewa in Jalan Kolam, located behind the Luyang police station.

However, the owner of the house saw him and alerted the police right away. The man then ran to another house, and took the woman hostage.

The victim was outside her house when she was taken at knifepoint, said George.

Armed with a knife, the man locked one arm around the woman's neck as he took her to the busy street.

He dragged her about 1.5km before releasing the woman near the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 after the two hours standoff with the authorities.

The incident will be investigated under Kidnapping Act 1961 and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempting to murder.
