Janda Baik tragedy update: Second UiTM student found dead

BENTONG: The deadly tragedy at the Lata Charok waterfall at Janda Baik here today has claimed a second life.

A 22-year-old male student, who was reported missing after a tree fell on a group of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) students, has been found dead.

Search and rescue crew members found the body of Muhammad Kamil Md Sukri pinned under the tree at about 12.15pm.

State Civil Defence Force (APM) director Zainal Yusoff said the rescue team is in the midst of clearing the fallen tree trunk and branches to retrieve the body.

Kamil became the second fatality of the incident after Noorain Mohtar, 23, died on the spot when she and her university mates were struck by the tree at about 4am.

It is learnt that the duo, along with 138 students and four lecturers from the UiTM Puncak Alam campus in Selangor, were camping at the site when the incident occurred.

They were taking part in a survival exercise near the waterfall.

Meanwhile, five injured victims were sent to the Bentong Hospital, while another, who suffered serious injuries, was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
