Filipino killed in Sandakan hit-and-run accident

SANDAKAN: A Filipino was killed when a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle crashed into the motorcycle he was riding at Mile 21 of Jalan Labuk here, this morning.

The 4WD driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle abandoned.

The 30-year-old plantation worker died of serious injuries at the scene in the 5.30am accident.

Based on a preliminary investigation, district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azhar Hamin said the victim was heading towards Sandakan, while the 4WD was travelling in the opposite direction towards Telupid.

“The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, which skidded (into the opposite lane) and rammed the oncoming motorcycle.

“When police arrived at the scene, they found (the 4WD) vehicle abandoned.

“We are now looking for the driver to assist in our probe under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

Mohd Azhar also urged witnesses and those with information about the driver to come forward to facilitate the police investigation.
