Friendly reminder notices to 62,000 companies for GST compliance failure

PUTRAJAYA: Friendly reminder notices will be issued to 62,000 companies in the country for failing to comply with guidelines in submitting their goods and services tax (GST) statements.

In a statement today, Customs Director-General, Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy said the policy to issue friendly reminders was a new step to prioritise 'informed compliance' rather than the old method of 'enforced compliance'.

"Through this 'infomed compliance' which aims to raise understanding and compliance, the department has issued 21,000 friendly reminder notices in the first phase and will begin to issue another 41,000 online GST registrants in phase two," he added.

Registrants can check for these notices through the "Taxpayer Access Point" or TAP.

Based on registered data, Subromaniam said the notices were issued to errant companies who had either wrongly or purposely declared tax collection that were below the expected amount.

"We will give them three months to amend their statements dated from April 1, 2015," he said, adding that auditing and legal action would be taken against these companies after the grace period.

Registrants are advised to take this opportunity to make amendments to their statements and pay the rightful amount.

"Stern actions can be taken on companies which fail to comply with provisions under the Goods and Services Tax Act (GST) 2014," he added.
