Sultan of Selangor orders Jais to act against Subang mosque over Sivarasa's 'ceramah'

SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has issued a decree, ordering the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to take action against a mosque committee for allowing a PKR member of parliament to hold a 'ceramah' in its premises.

Subang Member of Parliament R. Sivarasa last week reportedly delivered a ceramah to a congregation at the Masjid An Nur in Kampung Melayu Subang.

Sivarasa's action has reportedly incurred the Sultan's displeasure.

Selangor Religious Department director Datuk Haris Kasim said he was informed of this by Sultan Sharafuddin's private secretary Datuk Munir Bani.

"I was informed that the Sultan was displeased by the MP's conduct.

"In accordance with what Selangor Islamic Council chairman Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa had said in his speech during the breaking of fast ceremony at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque yesterday, all mosque management must abide by the rule that prohibits unauthorised speakers from giving a 'ceramah' in their mosque.

Haris said Sultan Sharafuddin had issued a decree to Munir, that Jais take action against the nazir of the mosque and its committee for allowing it to happen.

"The management of Masjid An-Nur has also been summoned last Friday to give their statement regarding the incident. The investigation paper has been submitted to the Selangor palace," he said.

Last Wednesday, Sivarasa was said to have appeared at the mosque as a representative of Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, before he began delivering a 'ceramah' at the mosque's prayer hall.

Several pictures of the PKR MP in the mosque, which went viral, led to dissatisfaction among several quarters.

Earlier yesterday, several non-government organisations had delivered a memorandum of protest regarding the incident to Jais.

The memorandum included criticism of Sivarasa's conduct, which they regarded as being disrespectful to Islam.

Kesatuan Melayu Nasional secretary-general Datuk Khairul Khuzaini Zamsani said the memorandum was signed together with Permuafakatan Ayahanda SeMalaysia organisation, Kota Damansara Residents representative, as well as Pertubuhan Aduan Masyarakat dan Pengguna Selangor.

He said they had urged the mosque committee members to issue an apology to the Sultan and to Muslims in general, and issue an official statement regarding the incident.
