Man jailed five days for stealing perfume to be sold for 'zakat fitrah'

KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man who stole a perfume set and told the magistrate's court that he did so to pay for zakat fitrah, was today sentenced to five days jail and fined RM800 in default three days jail.

Mohamad Hafiz Pitan Abdullah, 34, admitted to stealing the perfume set valued at RM374 at VOID2 at the Mid Valley Megamall at 9.30pm on June 24.

Mohamad Hafiz, who was not represented, had in mitigation told registrar officer Nik Mohd Fadli Nik Azlan that he stole the perfume set to pay for zakat fitrah, which is charity given to the poor in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan.

“I am unemployed and will not commit such an offence again. Please impose a lenient sentence on me,” he said.

Prosecuting officer ASP Nom Phot Prackdit requested the court to impose a sentence to befit the crime, which would serve as a lesson to the accused.
