Evening blaze kills woman trapped on first floor

KUALA TERENGGANU: A 31-year-old woman was burnt to death when fire razed her home at Jalan Kepong in Pengadang Baru here, today.

State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Sharikan Bustaman said Siti Nor Munirah Abu Bakar’s charred remains were found on the ground floor after she is believed to have fallen from the first floor of the double-storey wooden house, which collapsed during the fire.

He said the deceased was alone at home and is believed to have been trapped during the 4.30pm blaze.

“The Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue Station received a distress call from the public at 4.33pm and 21 firemen in three fire engines were deployed to the scene a minute later,” he said when met at the scene.

He said his men managed to control the fire from spreading to the other houses in 30 minutes and douse the fire completely at 5.30pm.

“We only found the charred remains after the fire was put out. It is learnt the victim was alone on the first floor and could not escape in time as the fire spread very fast due to hot weather,” he added.

Sharikan said his men are investigating the cause of the fire.

The victim’s family had declined to comment about the incident.
