Army chief: Four new army camps to be ready by year-end

KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of four new army camps is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Army chief General Datuk Seri Zulkiple Kassim said the four new camps are located in Hutan Melintang, Perak; Bera, Pahang; Segamat and Pagoh, Johor.

“The cost is about RM50 million for one new camp. The new camps are needed as the location of existing bases are no longer suitable for operations.

“Another reason is that it costs a lot to maintain older buildings, which are also incompatible with new buildings in the camp,” he told reporters at the army’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Camp Perdana Sungai Besi here, today.

He said the Bera military camp in Pahang, for example, was too close to the National Park.

Zulkiple said the planning and construction of the four new camps began early this year.

“We have yet to decide which units will be placed at the new camps,” he added.

During the event, Zulkiple also distributed duit raya to 90 orphans and 20 children from community-based rehabilitation centres.

Present was the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.
