Najib takes swipe at opposition in Kajang MRT tweet

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in a late night tweet yesterday, managed to drum up publicity of sorts for the next phase of the Mass Rail Transit (MRT) project.

The prime minister posted a picture of a road sign for the Kajang MRT station on his Twitter account, along with the words: “The Real Kajang Move. Coming to you in seven days. #JomNaikMRT.”

The second phase of the MRT line, from Sungai Buloh to Kajang, is expected to be fully operational by July 17.

But Najib’s tweet was seen as simultaneously taking a swipe at the opposition.

The so-called “Kajang Move” was a political manoeuvre said to have been enacted in 2014 to replace the then menteri besar of Selangor, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, by getting Kajang assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh to resign so a by-election could be held with PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as candidate.

However, Anwar was soon convicted of sodomy and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ibrahim contested the by-election instead and won.

Eventually, Khalid was sacked from the party and attempts to name Dr Wan Azizah as menteri besar failed, leading to the appointment of Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
