Rabies outbreak: More than 1,000 pets in Serian vaccinated

SERIAN: More than 1,000 pets from seven villages affected by the rabies outbreak in the district have been vaccinated.

State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said to date, a total of 929 cats, 241 dogs and 13 other pet animals have been vaccinated.

The vaccination was conducted several teams from the State Veterinary Services Department, which were making rounds in Kampung Krait, Kampung Paon Rimu, Kampung Paon Rimu Bakong, Kampung Remun, Kampung Lebor, Kampung Empasa and Kampung Tong Nibong.

“The department has also conducted 52 awareness campaigns on the virus, which were participated by 2,736 villagers from the affected villages.

“Operation to vaccinate the animals and the awareness campaigns were conducted with the cooperation of other government agencies and non-governmental organisations together with the support of villagers.

“The department will continue to conduct the operation at all housing estates affected by the virus outbreak,” said the committee in a statement today.

The statement was issued after a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and the committee’s chairman Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petra Jaya near here today.

Present during the meeting were State Local Government and Housing Minister Prof Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian; State Education, Science and Technological Research Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong and State Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.

Earlier in a separate statement, the Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah confirmed that there are four confirmed cases of people infected by the virus.

The latest case of victim tested positive for rabies involved a five-year-old girl from Kampung Ambungan here.
