Health Ministry dismisses report of new rabies case in Melaka

KUCHING: Health Ministry have dismissed reports suggesting that there is a new confirmed case of people contracting rabies.

The ministry’s director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah when asked to comment on the case said that there was “no such report”.

“We will announce if it’s confirmed. Getting dog bites does not necessarily mean one will be infected by rabies,” he told the New Straits Times today.

A Chinese daily reported that a six-year-old boy was rushed to the Melaka Hospital after he suffered from breathing difficulties two days ago.

Checks showed the boy had been bitten by a dog when his family were in Sarawak to celebrate the Gawai Dayak celebration at a village in Serian in May.

The reports said the boy is currently in stable condition.
