UPM bags gold at National Intellectual Property Awards 2017

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has been named the gold winner in the Organisation Category at the National Intellectual Property Awards 2017 today.

UPM vice chancellor Prof Dr Aini Ideris said UPM has developed an efficient ecosystem in the commercialisation of intellectual property.

“We want to ensure products innovated by our students and lecturers can be commercialised. Our students, they are not only an innovators but also entrepreneurs.

“Under InnoHub, our students have been taught to commercialised and manage their products.

“Every month, we will hold meetings with those in the relevant industry and the media to promote our latest products,” she said, adding that to date, there have been 40 start-ups under InnoHub.

Aini said there were about 270,000 of intellectual properties under UPM and the university has patented about 1,000 products.

“Among products that received positive feedbacks were Afdhal Oil and our eczema cream,” she told reporters after the event here today.

The award is in its 12th year and this time round, it recorded the highest number of participations with 518 submissions.

Submissions are open to the public and private sectors, universities, high schools and individuals.

This year, three new categories were also introduced, namely the Intellectual Property Special Award Cooperative Credit, Special Award Minister of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism, and Special Innovation International Secondary School Level Award.

Winners of each category received cash prizes, trophies and certificates recognised by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
