KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and several other countries in the region are collaborating with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to formulate ways to minimise airspace and airport constraints which give rise to flight departure delays.
In a statement today, the Civil Aviation Malaysia Department (DCA) said that they pay serious attention to repeated departure delays involving flights from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and klia2 to several major destinations in the region, especially China.
The DCA said that repeated departure delays are a result of several factors, including airspace or airport congestion, especially in China; airspace constraints imposed on civil or commercial flights in destination countries or countries along flights routes; and large-scale weather deviations.
"It should be noted that all departing flights from any departure point are subject to the readiness of the destination country or countries along the route to receive such flights," read the statement.
The DCA also said that delays for morning, afternoon and evening departures at KLIA and klia2 have recorded an increase from January to May this year, as compared to the same period last year.
"The percentage of delayed flights on departure at KLIA and klia2 vary from nine per cent to 37 per cent – an increase of two per cent to 23 per cent when compared to the same period in 2016," said the DCA.
