'It happened in the blink of an eye'

GEORGE TOWN: MUHD Faiz Ahmad Juhari, 31, was inches away from a head-on collision with a Volkswagen.

But he managed to swerve his Nissan Navara to the left lane to avoid the oncoming car.

The civil servant, his businesswoman wife Hafiza Mustapa, 31, and her employee were heading to their shop in Sungai Petani to deliver some goods at the time of the incident.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, Hafiza said everything happened in the blink of an eye.

She said her husband was driving when he noticed the car in front of him suddenly changing to the left lane.

“We saw bright lights shining towards us and my husband managed to avoid it by swinging to the left.

“We couldn’t see what car it was but it was coming really fast.

“We could feel the strong
rush of wind when the car passed us.

“I am still traumatised and shocked by the incident. I don’t think I will be travelling any time soon.

“Most of all, I am grateful to Allah for protecting us from harm,” she said.

Hafiza said the driver of the car continued to drive on at high speed.

She said, about 100m in front of them, she saw a damaged Perodua Alza and a Lamborghini on the road divider.

“It will take some time for me to get over this incident,” said Hafiza, who is expecting her third child.

In the 1.30am incident early Saturday morning, a Volkswagen crashed into five vehicles when the driver went against the flow of traffic on the North-South Expressway.

The 31-year-old driver was heading to Sungai Petani from Butterworth when he made a sudden U-turn at Km116 of the highway near the Sungai Dua lay-by in Kedah.

After ramming into three oncoming cars, he continued driving up to Km124.3 of the highway, near Bertam, where he rammed into two more vehicles.

He broke his right hand while the drivers of the five vehicles he crashed into sustained minor injuries.

A motorcyclist, Naim Halidan, 30, who stopped to watch the crash, died when he fell into a drain by the side of the highway.

Police are waiting for the results of the driver’s blood test to determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The driver has been transferred to the Sungai Petani Hospital for treatment.
