More opting for DLP, teachers to undergo extra training online

KUALA LUMPUR: Teachers teaching Mathematics and Science subjects in English will receive extra training online to cater to the rising demand for Dual Language Programme (DLP), said Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.

He said more parents are requesting for schools to have DLP classes which prompted the Education Ministry to work on improving the teachers' ability in teaching both subjects.

"There are currently 4,783 qualified DLP teachers to teach Mathematics and Science in English," he said in response to Dr Mohd Hatta Md Ramli's (Kuala Krai-PAS) question on the status of DLP and challenges faced in its implementation in Dewan Rakyat today.

Kamalanathan said there are currently 1,214 schools offering DLP classes. Rural areas have 394 such classes - 218 in primary schools and 176 in secondary schools.

“Urban areas have 367 primary schools and 453 secondary schools offering DLP.

Under DLP, the English Language is used fully in the teaching and learning of Science, Mathematics and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.
