KUALA LUMPUR: Police will deploy 12,000 personnel during the upcoming 29th Sea Games to ensure safety and public order throughout the event.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said they would be deployed to the venues of the sporting event as well as the accommodation of the athletes and their officials.
"I assure all visitors, athletes and officials that the Sea Games will be safe so everybody is welcome to enjoy the sporting events," he said today.
Khalid was speaking to reporters after attending the final exercise, dubbed “Ex-Rimau”, which was part of the security drill in preparation for the Sea Games from Aug 19 to 30.
Khalid said his men are fully prepared to safeguard security during the Sea Games.
"I am satisfied because I know we are fully prepared for the game," he said.
The final security drill was conducted at the Royal Malaysian Police college in Cheras today.
The drill was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, National Security Council's director-general Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
Similar exercises have been carried out at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Bukit Jalil National Stadium, KL Sentral, National Sailing Centre in Langkawi, International Endurance Park in Terengganu.
During the event, police will join forces with other enforcement agencies under the National Blue Ocean Strategy, including the Armed Forces and Fire and Rescue Department.
Meanwhile, Khalid said no threats have been detected so far on the Sea Games.
Police, he said, had studied terror activities in other neighbouring countries and steps had been taken to ensure that it would not happen in Malaysia.
