10,000 to take part in Malaysia Day 2017 celebrations

KOTA KINABALU: Over 10,000 are expected to participate in the Malaysia Day celebration here next month.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is scheduled to attend the event on September 16, which will take place at Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who co-chairs the Malaysia Day 2017 celebration main committee with Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, said the Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Abang Amar Johari Abang Openg will also be invited.

Speaking after the committee’s first meeting held here today, he said the full details of the celebration, which will include special performances, will be announced later.

“The cost of the event will be fully covered by Communications and Multimedia Ministry and we would like thank its minister (Salleh) for this.

“We do not want people to say that this is just a repeat of programmes every year. Malaysia Day is aimed at rewnwing our spirit (of unity in the country) annually.

“A lot of people will be participating, including non governmental organisations, volunteers as well as civil servants.

“In fact, there will be some 1,500 people who will perform during the celebration,” he said.
