In praise of Merdeka

KUANTAN: Every year a food stall operator in Peramu here will eagerly wait for August.

This month is the time for Wan Rahimi Wan Mokhtar to decorate his premises with the colours of the national flag to celebrate the National Day on Aug 31.

It has been his annual affair to do so for the past 16 years.

The 55-year-old has spent thousands of ringgit to display his patriotism by decorating and painting images connected to Merdeka at the stall.

His works include displaying the Jalur Gemilang flags at every corner of the stall, building a replica of the Jalur Gemilang made of recycled plastic bottles, and putting together various Merdeka-themed paintings and an arch.

This year the father-of-two has given his antique Mini Cooper car a fresh coat of paint before decorating it with Jalur Gemilang and affixing stickers bearing the image of prime minister on its bonnet.

Wan Rahimi said this was a mark of respect to those who had struggled for independence and he wanted the younger generation to be more patriotic.

"Every year, I try to find fresh ideas to brighten up the premises in the run-up to Merdeka...for example in the past, I painted the image of the first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra on the wall.

"My customers find it unique to have their meals surrounded by the national flags and decorations.

“In fact, they never leave the premises without taking pictures," he said.

Wan Rahimi said despite his sincere efforts, there were some who criticised him for wasting his time and money.

"I am not bothered as everyone is free to express their views and for me all this is done as a respect for the National Day. I am doing this for self-fulfillment.

“I hope every Malaysian will realise that August is special as it is the time the country achieved its independence.

"Sometimes passing motorists will stop to take pictures and have a short conversation with me.

“Many will say that the decorations are eye-catching and a good way to attract customers," he said.

Wan Rahimi said his workers would help with the decorations and painting job.
