ALOR STAR: A Barisan Nasional assemblyman today demanded an answer on the delayed RM28.8 million Pantai Chenang Waterfront project which has yet to be completed despite several extensions.
At the State Legislative Assembly Sitting today Nor Saidi Nanyan (BN-Kuah) said the project, which was supposed to be deliver before the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2017 (LIMA'17) in March, has yet to be completed.
Nor Saidi said this when debating the motion of thanks to the Sultan of Kedah speech.
He said this is despite several extensions given to the contractor. It is understood that his question would be answered by the relevant state Committee chairman during the winding up speech session tomorrow.
Several reports on the troubled project following complaints by Langkawi residents and visitors were highlighted by the New Straits Times following complaints from readers about Pantai Chenang which was described as a 'cowboy town' instead of a popular tourist attraction.
Besides being an eyesore, the project also caused traffic congestion in Pantai Chenang.
It was reported that the State Economic Planning Division (BPEN) was mulling termination of the contractor awarded the federal funded project.
It was also reported that Langkawi Tourism Association (LTA) chairman Zainudin Kadir had lodged a police report in December, calling for the authorities to investigate the project following grouses aired by its members.
On similar note, Nor Saidi yesterday urged the state government to give due attention on the need of systematic planning for infrastructures in Pantai Chenang.
He said the coastline, which is described as a "Gift to Langkawi" has many flaws although it is supposed to be a world-class tourism attraction.
"It is shameful that there is only one public toilet along the beach which shows a lack of infrastructure.
"There is no dedicated swimming area and there is no proper regulation on the watersports activity which saw two accident cases involving tourists along the beach," he added.
