4PAM gives Mavcom tongue-lashing over proposed PSC hike

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Public Transport Users Association (4PAM) has demanded that the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) and the Transport Ministry provide a breakdown of the collection and utilisation of the passenger service charge (PSC).

4PAM president Ajit Johl, who was responding to news of a proposed 46 per cent hike in the PSC, said Mavcom is turning to tax payers for its financial sustenance, but does not disclose how it spends the revenue.

He also demanded that Mavcom explain how users could get refunds on the PSC, particularly those who miss their flights, as the amount collected is in the millions of ringgit.

“How can a commission tax users to finance its operations?

“Does Mavcom have something to hide? Even Sdn Bhd accounts are available for scrutiny via the Companies Commission of Malaysia’s (SSM) website,” he said in a statement today.

Ajit said the high cost of goods and services at airports, despite operators having more space and visitors than at other commercial buildings in the Klang Valley, is also a matter of some concern.

“With increasing passenger traffic and non-passenger traffic, shop owners should not be charging higher rates. This is profiteering and Mavcom should step in and ensure that the price of goods and services is controlled.

“4PAM is suggesting that the Transport Ministry form a committee of stakeholders to resolve the PSC issue.

“Initiatives must be conducted in consultation, and the rights of users must be respected and protected,” Ajit added.
