Suicide attempt went awry for man who cuts tongue and tried jumping off building

KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed man slashed his tongue in an attempt to commit suicide in a rented room in Likas near here.

In the 11am incident two days ago, the 22-year-old local had also tried to jump off from the second floor of the building.

His suicide attempt failed as the cousin's quick action saved him. Police, who arrived at the scene, found the man with injuries on his tongue.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said depression had led the victim to resort to suicide.

"It is learnt that the victim had been feeling depressed due to his parents, who always blamed him and bashed him for being irresponsible (person).

“We have taken statement from the cousin, who said the victim had been behaving strange lately.

"It is learnt that the man was always depressed and would talk to himself. He also never shared his problems with the cousin even when asked," he said, adding the duo had been staying together for eight months.

Chandra said the man had been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2, where he received seven stitches.

Yesterday in Sandakan, a 21-year old foreigner leapt to his death from the fourth floor of the Taman Mesra apartment building.

In the incident, a neighbour saw the man tying a piece of cloth around his eyes before running and jumping from the balcony.

Sandakan police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azhar Hamin said the man had just arrived from Labuan to solve his marital problems and was depressed.
