Man killed by LRT train 'jumped' on track

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who was killed after being crushed by a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train and believed to have descended onto the tracks voluntarily, has been identified as a Chinese male.

Wangsa Maju Police Chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah, reported that his team received a distressing call at 10.56 pm yesterday from auxiliary police regarding the incident.

According to Ashari, the victim, a local man, was waiting with other passengers on platform one as the train approached.

"As the train was approaching to stop, the victim suddenly jumped and laid on the tracks.

"The LRT train continued and collided with the victim, causing severe injuries to both legs.

"The Fire and Rescue Department attempted to move the victim but found that he had already passed away," he said in a statement today.

Medical officers pronounced the victim dead at 11.13pm, and the body was subsequently taken to the hospital for postmortem purposes.

"The case is classified as sudden death, hence, members of the public with relevant information (on the matter) can reach out to 039289922 to assist in the investigation," he said.

Previously, it was reported that a 27-year-old man was killed when he was run over by an LRT train after he fell onto the track at the Dato' Keramat LRT station last night.

According to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department Operation Commander Mohd Fabell Md Yasin, the department received a distress call at 9.05pm last night about the incident.

The victim was run over by the train and pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers.

Meanwhile, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd in a statement last night said services to the Kelana Jaya route were disrupted and passengers had to wait for a long time following the incident.

They said the incident, which occurred around 8.50pm had activated the emergency system and caused the train to stop for an extended period.
