Climber, 35, collapses and dies on Gunung Nuang

KAJANG: A 35-year-old climber collapsed and died while hiking up Gunung Nuang in Hulu Langat, here yesterday.

Victim Aw Kok Cheng, 35, was climbing up the 1,493m mountain with seven friends when he collapsed near the Pengasih checkpoint at 12.15pm.

Aw’s friends then alerted the Fire and Rescue Department for help.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Muhamad Hissam Sidik said a team from Kajang fire station was deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 12.35pm.

He said the team started its operation at 3.15pm and took about 24 hours to bring down the body to the foothill.

“The operation was dampened by bad weather and difficult terrain. The team only managed to meet with the climbers, all men, around 7am today.

“Aw’s body has been handed over to police for further action,” he said, adding that the other seven climbers were safe.

The victim’s body has been sent to Serdang Hospital for a post-mortem.
