Sipitang floods clear up, main road to villages now accessible

SIPITANG: The flood situation in the district has begun improving with waters gradually receding in affected areas.

Sabah Civil Defence deputy director Lieutenant Colonel Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said the weather is now clear and several flooded village roads had dried up.

“Although some areas are still inundated but floodwaters are subsiding. The main road and the streets leading to affected villages are passable,” he said.

Villages affected by the flood are Naluyan, Kalamauh, Kesili, Sungai Tiga, Mesapol, Mesapol Lama, Babangkong, and Lalang.

As at 7am, 181 people from 55 families from the affected villages have sought shelter at the district’s multipurpose hall.

Mohd Izaimi said evacuees would be allowed to return home once the overall situation is safe, adding the department will continue to monitor weather and flood.

Meanwhile in Tenom, two evacuation centres – Penontomon Cultural House and Labu 2 Community Hall were closed at 11am.
