Only 1 school in Terengganu used as flood evacuation centre

Kuala Terengganu: Only Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Padang Pulut in Dungun is still being used as a temporary evacuation centre (PPS) since floods began last Tuesday.

Terengganu Education Department director Jelani Sulong said 34 flood victims were in the school.

The building that was used as an evaucation centre was located far from the school's examination hall, he added.

He also said the Malay and English listening tests for the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) in Terengganu went smoothly this morning.

Jelani said all District Education Offices had been instructed to be ready to mobilise Ops Paung in case of flooding during the examination.

The SPM began with the Practical Test for Science on Dec 5 till 7, last year, followed by the Malay speaking test (Jan 8-11) and the English speaking test which ended Jan 23. The written test will start tomorrow with the final exam on March 7.

A total of 18,492 SPM candidates are sitting the examination in the State.

Of that number, 3,420 candidates are in Kuala Terengganu district followed by 3,005 candidates in Besut; 2,827 candidates in Kemaman; 2,615 candidates in Kuala Nerus and 2,284 candidates in Dungun.

Another 1,742 candidates are in Marang followed by 1,469 candidates in Hulu Terengganu and 1,130 candidates in Setiu.
