Information sought on snatch thieves in Facebook Live video

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have urged those who have information on the two snatch thieves caught grabbing a pedestrian’s smartphone on a Facebook Live video to come forward.

Wangsa Maju police chief Superintendent Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said thus far, police had yet to identify the two men.

“The victim has also yet to come forward to lodge a police report. We want those who know them or have information on them to cooperate with us,” he said when contacted.

Roy had on Saturday said police were tracing the men based on the video, and would check if they were involved in other cases.

It was reported that a pair of motorcycle-borne snatch thieves unwittingly exposed their faces to stunned viewers when they grabbed a pedestrian’s smartphone while the latter was live on Facebook.

The victim, who was on his way to Masjid Idaman for Aidiladha prayers on Friday, had decided to capture the festive atmosphere in his Setapak neighbourhood on Facebook Live as he walked to the mosque.

As he panned left and right, the two snatch thieves, coming from the opposite direction, grabbed his phone, and after a brief struggle, fled.

The Facebook Live video, however, continued to stream, and as the two thieves made their getaway, their faces could clearly be seen.

The 78-second video has since gone viral on Facebook.
