Call to review parking charges at KTM stations

IPOH: Parking fees at rail stations should be reviewed, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

He said the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC), which manages parking facilities at KTM stations, should review implementation of the charges.

"I was informed that commuters who park their vehicles at the Tanjung Malim KTM station will be charged from tomorrow.

"I hope that the corporation would review its decision to charge commuters for parking, not just in Perak, but generally, at all its stations.

"The government aims to encourage the public to use public transport including rail service. This move, however, may affect and discourage people from using the service.

"Parking space should be provided to commuters for free so that they are not burdened (with additional charges).

"I also feel that the respective state government should be informed of such decision. I didn't know about the parking fees until recently," he told a Press conference at his office today.

On a separate matter, he said the public must play their role in ensuring cleanliness especially in urban areas where illegal dumping of rubbish was rampant.

"We are looking at taking stern legal action against litterbugs, although I prefer to adopt educational methods. Cleanliness is not the responsibility of only the local authorities.

"I feel that the existing laws are sufficient. However, we need to do more to change the habit so that one day, there will be no need for such laws because everyone plays their part in maintaining cleanliness," he said.
