Strong winds during storm sees roof of school block blown away

SEGAMAT: Part of the roof of a two-storey classroom block at SMK Dato’ Bentara Dalam here was blown away during a storm today.

No one was injured in the 11am incident as it happened when the 70 students who occupy the block were at the canteen during recess.

Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said, for now, the affected students would be placed temporarily at other classrooms.

“The incident occurred during heavy rain and strong winds between 10.50am and 11.45am. The metal deck roof of the building was blown away... four classrooms were exposed to the rain.”

Ayub was speaking to reporters after visiting the school, accompanied by Johor Education Department deputy director Azman Adnan and representatives from the district Education Office and Civil Defence Force.

He said the students will be placed at other classrooms while repair works were being conducted.

“The cost for the repair work has so far been estimated at about RM98,000,” he said.

He said parents should not worry as the state Education Department was doing all it could to make sure the students’ lessons would continue despite the incident.

Meanwhile, SMK Dato’ Bentara Dalam principal Zainal Abidin Sakiran said two classrooms on the first floor of the block were badly affected.

“The roof blew off during a storm, and it involved only one block. Thankfully, all the students were in the canteen at the time,” said Zainal Abidin, adding that the school currently has more than 800 students and 94 teachers.

He assured parents and students that classes would resume tomorrow as the affected students would take their lessons in other parts of the school.
