Health Ministry gives assurance DNA analysis will be completed today

PERMATANG PAUH: The Health Ministry has assured that the DNA analysis of those who perished in the fire at Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school will be completed by the end of the day.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the process was going on smoothly.

"We hope to be able to identify the victims as soon as possible so that the families can proceed with the burial process.

"The authorities, carrying out the DNA analysis, have been working round the clock since yesterday," he told newsmen when met during a Merdeka Day gathering at UiTM here today.

As of yesterday, authorities have not been able to identify any of the victims, who were badly burnt.

Meanwhile, Hilmi said two of the students, were still in critical condition at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

He said they suffered from internal bleeding and fractured hip bones after jumping out of the gutted building.

He added that the others injured, including a member of the public, are being treated at the normal ward.

"We are continuously monitoring their conditions and hope that they will recuperate soon.

The pre-dawn fire in the dormitory of the all-boys school in Kampung Datuk Keramat claimed the lives of 23 people – 21 students and two wardens.

Authorities are still identifying the cause of the fire.
