Occupational safety experts offer to help tahfiz schools rectify safety issues

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) has offered to help religious schools rectify any issues they face.

Its president, Khairuddin Hairan, said the society would gather OSH experts to look at religious schools as well as orphanages and homes for the aged.

In a statement today, he said the expertise of OSH practitioners would ensure these premises meet building safety requirements.

"MSOSH has a lineup of experts by fields who developed modules on Community Based Risk Disaster Management (CBDRM) and Psychological First Aid (PFA).

“We will identify several tahfiz schools, orphanages and old folks homes that need assistance on issues related to OSH. After rectifying the OSH issues of these premises, the premises will become the implementation models of OSH for other institutions,” he said.

The society is offering professional services in OSH for free after the deadly fire at a tahfiz school in Datuk Keramat.

Khairuddjn said as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) under the Human Resources Ministry, MSOSH was responsible for rectifying weaknesses of OSH in the workplace.

"Since MSOSH’s establishment in 1971, we have been consistent in advocating the importance of OSH and it should not be sidelined regardless of the size of the workplace or the industry as this involves human lives and should be taken seriously.

“Authorities also play an important role in OSH enforcement... the Fire Service Act 1988, the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, Uniform Building Bylaws, and other laws were specially gazetted to regulate issues related to OSH,” he said.
