336 illegally felled logs seized at Kanowit logging camp

SIBU: A total of 336 logs of various types and sizes worth more than RM300,000 were seized during a raid on a logging camp in Ulu Tuah, Jalan Nibong Tada-Kanowit in Kanowit near here yesterday.

The logs, believed to be illegally felled, were confiscated during an integrated operation involving Sarawak marine police, State Forestry Department and Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

The raiding party also seized a lorry, laden with some of the logs, and an excavator, both worth RM260,000, during the 11.45am operation.

Region 5 Marine Police commander Assistant Commissioner Salehuddin Mat Zaman said checks showed the camp had been operating illegally with expired licence.

“Checks showed the licence of the camp had expired since last year,” he told reporters today.

Salehuddin added no arrest was made during the raid.

“The logs and the confiscated machineries have been handed over to the Sibu Forest Department for further action,” he said.
