Australian BASE jumper injured after crashing into glass panel

SIBU: It was a close shave for an Australian BASE jumper when he crashed into the glass panel on the 15th floor of Wisma Sanyan here today.

The jumper, identified Gary Favre, 32, who is one of 84 jumpers for the 9th Sibu International BASE Jump event, sustained wounds and bruises in the 8am incident.

During the trial attempt, Favre had jumped from the top of the building but his bid was affected by strong winds causing him to crash into the glass panel.

The incident created panic among passers-by when they saw Favre’s body dangling outside the glass panel.

It was learnt that a team rushed to the 15th floor of the building to rescue Favre and took him to a private hospital here for treatment.

Sibu Resident, Hii Chang Kee, said Favre sustained minor cuts on his legs and thigh from the broken glass panels.

“We hope all quarters involved with the event will take precautionary measures to prevent recurrence of the same incident,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sibu International BASE Jump event director Captain (Rtd) Abdul Aziz Ahmad said cause of the incident is still being investigated.

He, however, stressed that all jumpers involved in the three-day long event, which begins tomorrow (Friday) have been equipped with safety equipment.
