Drug addict beats wife and son at crowded morning market

SUNGAI PETANI: Desperate for money to buy drug, a man beat up his wife and son before a large crowd at a market here this morning.

The man became aggressive after he failed to snatch his wife’s handbag when she was walking with their 3-year-old son at the market.

Shocked by his action, market-goers came to the woman’s rescue and managed to apprehend the man before he could hurt the woman, in her 30s, and the toddler further.

Kedah National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada) director Mahadzir Elias said the man was then handed to the Kuala Kedah Nada office.

He said the man tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana.

He said initial investigation showed the man, also in his 30s, had been arrested several times before for behaving aggressively towards his family while under the influence of drug. There were also several complaints received by Nada about the man who was considered a hard-core addict.

He said the man is being investigated under Section 3 (1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
