Sungai Kuala Nerang surpasses danger mark; floods imminent in Padang Terap

PADANG TERAP: A 12-hour continuous rain since yesterday has caused the water level of Sungai Kuala Nerang to breach the danger mark and trigger flash floods in low-lying areas in the district this morning.

As of noon today, one relief centre was opened to provide temporary shelter for a family after Kampung Kubang Juluk and Kampung Bedikari were inundated in knee-deep water.

Also affected was state Housing and Local Government, Water Supply and Water Resources Committee chairman Datuk Badrol Hisham Hashim’s home in Kampung Barokhas.

Padang Terap Malaysia Civil Defence Force officer Roshidi Kassim said the access road to Kampung Jelutong and Kampung Kuala Tekai was submerged by the flood.

However, he said relief centres had yet to be opened in the two areas.

He said the water level was expected to rise if the rain continued until this evening.

He said about 20 families in the areas had been placed on alert for possible evacuation if the condition worsened.

He added that the water level at Drainage and Irrigation Department’s reading station in Sungai Kuala Nerang was recorded at 17.8m, surpassing its danger level of 17.07m, at 3am today.
