Pantai 2 Regional Sewage Treatment Plant upgraded to accommodate 1.423 million residents in KL and PJ

KUALA LUMPUR: Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) has upgraded their Pantai 2 Regional Sewage Treatment Plant (P2STP) here to accommodate the needs of 1.423 million people in the surrounding area.

IWK chief executive officer Faizal Othman said the move was possible because P2STP has recently adopted the Advance Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic (Advance AAO) process.

He said the (Advance AAO) process produces high quality sewage and treats the waste water by removing chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus.

“P2STP began utilising the (Advance AAO) system since July 27. The plant covers the whole of Kuala Lumpur from Titiwangsa to Old Klang Road.

“This plant also covers a part of Selangor, which is Petaling Jaya,” he said in a media briefing here today.

P2STP was previously a large aerated lagoon with a capacity that could cover a population of 877,000.

“Ever since the plant began operations, about 140 small and inefficient sewage treatment plants have been rationalised, where half were closed and the others converted into parking spaces.

“In the future, we are planning to rationalise about 3,000 small and inefficient sewage treatment plants with larger capacities through the construction of regional and centralised plants,” he said.

Meanwhile, its regional operations head (southern) Ir Mohd Taufik Salleh advised the public to pay their bills on time.

“Because of the comprehensive technology that we are adopting now, IWK needs more energy to run this plant.

“The customers should to be aware that paying their sewerage bills was crucial to run operations smoothly,” he added.

Bernama had reported that IWK has successfully collected 87 per cent of the RM8 billion in sewerage bills accumulated since 1997.

Faizal added that to encourage and to ease the process of paying bills, IWK has introduced online transactions through JOMPAY.
