JOHOR BARU: A relative of Malaysian drug mule, Syzlin Hataman who was convicted and jailed in Peru but died in a hospital there on Saturday at 6.50pm local time, hopes that her remains can be repatriated back to Malaysia and for her to be buried at her hometown in Johor Baru.
Shaan Shah Mohd Nasir, the husband of Norabdah Mahmood, had said that it was his late wife’s wish to bring her cousin, Syzlin, home.
"She honestly wanted to get Syzlin back and for her to be reunited with her family even though the only family members that would accept her return were her aunts, Jamilah Abdullah and Robiah Abdullah. However, my wife didn't get to get her wish fulfilled. Now both of them are gone," said the 48-year-old Shaan.
However, the manager of a private company said, despite everything, he hopes to grant his late wife her wish and he is determine to bring Syzlin back, even though she is returning home in a coffin.
He hopes that the Malaysian embassy in Peru will try their best to repatriate Syzlin’s remains as he wish to have Syzlin buried at the Kebun Teh Muslim Cemetery where Norabdah was laid to rest.
Shaan said Robiah, who also wish to see Syzlin return home, now lives at a house in Larkin Jaya where Syzlin was supposed to live in when she returns.
Syzlin, who had been serving time at a Peruvian correctional facility, was later granted the Semi Libertad status on July 25, 2014 by the Peruvian Court, which allowed an offender to serve the sentence outside a prison as decided by the authorities.
Norabdah and Jamilah had been campaigning for Syzlin’s safe return to Malaysia over the last year.
It is understood that Syzlin was left stranded in Peru for almost eight years after being conned by her African lover to migrate and work in Peru without knowing that he was actually a member of a drug trafficking syndicate and he was just using her as a drug mule.
Johor Baru Parliamentary Welfare chairman Faridah Mustafa, who had been assisting Norabdah, Jamilah and Robiah with their efforts to bring back Syzlin with Johor Umno, said Norabdah and Jamilah passed away in September within a day of each other.
"Norabdah passed away on September 23 following a heart attack, while Jamilah died in Kuala Lumpur from old age when she went to visit a sick relative on September 22," said Faridah.
