Klang tahfiz fire: School unregistered as operator was 'too busy'

KAPAR: The Nur Al-Quran Learning and Tahfiz Centre in Jalan Pengkalan Rantau Panjang, which was razed in a fire today, is an unregistered school despite being in operation for almost four years.

The school’s first-floor male dormitory was burnt at 2.30pm today. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Fawaz Abdul Hamid, whose family owns the tahfiz school, said they have yet to register the institution with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).

“We are in the process of registering the school," he said when met at the scene today.

Asked on why it has yet to be registered with Jais, Fawaz said the family had been ‘busy with matters’ which resulted in the delay.

Fawaz claimed that the Public Works Department was supposed to check on the school on Oct 11 after he made a request, following the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah deadly fire last month in Keramat which killed 24 students.

“About 40 tahfiz schools in Klang have been inspected. We are among the six or seven that had yet to be checked by the PWD,” he said.

All 25 of Nur Al-Quran’s students, aged between 10 and 19, were in a Quran recital class on the ground floor when the fire broke out.

The students, who are mostly from the Klang Valley with several from Pahang and Kajang, lost all of their belongings in the incident, said Fawaz.

“Fortunately, a neighbour, who operates a homestay next to the school, has offered them temporary shelter. Classes will resume once the Fire and Rescue Department concludes its investigations and the building is certified safe and restored,” said Fawaz.
