Islamic scholars, investors invited to develop AI-powered Quran

KUALA LUMPUR: Islamic scholars and investors in the technology sector, especially in artificial intelligence (AI), are invited to collaborate in the development of an AI-powered Quran.

Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) chairman Tan Sri Dr Mohd Daud Bakar, said AI could make the understanding of knowledge, particularly the Quran, more accessible due to its various applications, comprehension, cognitive abilities, coherency and inclusivity that facilitate the programming of any knowledge.

"The Quran is the most consistent book that has its algorithm. This algorithm needs to be incorporated into AI to help readers better understand and appreciate the Quran.

"This is a challenge for scholars as well. We have 'AI-ed' many things, but we may be afraid or unwilling to AI the Quran.

"Perhaps it is the right time to call upon scholars and Islamic thinkers because the Quran has consistent data and algorithms from the Creator, making its knowledge more easily organised for us to implement AI in the Quran. It just requires courage.

"If we do this, the Quran will be more easily understood by non-Muslims as well. This is a challenge and an opportunity for us to make the Quran transparently visible with the power of AI," he said during the Quran recitation ceremony as part of the 'Jom Celik Al-Quran' Programme in 2023 held here today.

The 'khatam al-Quran' (completing reading the Quran) ceremony of the 'Jom Celik Al-Quran' programme is an annual programme held periodically by MAIWP's Human Development Division (BPI) Publicity Unit in collaboration with the Institut Pengajian Al-Quran (IPaQ), which started in 2020.

This year marks the third time it is being held, joined by 62 participants from three Quran study locations: Kampung Limau People's Housing Project, Darul Ilmi Senior Citizen Study Centre in Sungai Penchala, and Dar Assaadah Centre.

The programme, which focuses on the implementation of the Quranic Recitation Improvement Class (KTQ) leading to completion, aims to enable all Muslim communities in the federal territory to read the Quran well.

It also seeks to foster enthusiasm for Quranic recitation and a love for the words of Allah SWT. – BERNAMA
