Penang's Golden Sands Resort creates M'sia's largest floating kolam

GEORGE TOWN: Golden Sands Resort, Penang by Shangri-La has not only created a beautiful work of art, but earned an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with the largest floating ‘kolam’ in Malaysia, ahead of Deepavali celebrations on Oct 18.

The kolam floats on the surface of the resort’s 120,000-gallon swimming pool, and is a wonder to behold.

Featuring a peacock, lotus flowers and the ‘S’ logo of Shangri-La, it measures 638.02 sq m. It was made using 87 bags of dry coconut flakes weighing 435kg; 37.9kg of sticker glue; 47 pieces of styrofoam cut into various shapes and sizes; and 5,000 bulbs of fresh pompom chrysanthemums.

The kolam took over 100 volunteers ten consecutive days to complete.

The resort’s feat was certified by MBOR deputy general manager Mohamad Alex Edward Jamuh Abdullah. A traditional ‘tabla’ or Indian drum and classical Indian dances were performed to celebrate the successful MBOR attempt.

Resort manager Noel D’ Couto said the project would not have been possible without the support – in terms of time, talent and precision work – of volunteers from the Penang Hindu Association and hotel staff.

“This is a noble effort by the diverse people of Penang.

“It also reflects the good relations among the diverse people of Penang, and the harmony within a multi-cultural society.

“While we did this, we managed to set a record. This is unprecedented in the history of the resort,” Noel said.

He congratulated the resort for the amazing achievement.

“We witnessed the hard work and hours spent in making this into a reality. All this is unique for the forthcoming Deepavali celebration

“The unity is priceless, as everyone came together for such a meaningful cause,” he added.
