NGOs lodge police report against former Bersih deputy chairman for insulting Islam, royal institution and Jais

SHAH ALAM: A coalition of Selangor non-governmental organisations today urged the authorities to take stern action against a former deputy chairman of Bersih 2.0 for insulting Islam, the royal institution and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).

The call came after the man had allegedly written on Facebook that even Allah and Prophet Muhammad would be arrested by Jais for preaching without permission.

Gerakan NGO Selangor religious bureau chairman Mohd Shamsuddin Damin said the man’s actions did not only insult Jais and Islam, but also the royal institution.

“He is the same person who wanted to get rid of Jakim (Islamic Development Department)... what he did clearly makes fun of Allah and insults Islam and dakwah in this country.

“It was also insulting to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Sultan of Selangor because the religious department is under the power of the royal institution, and to Islam, which is the official religion of the country,” he told reporters outside the district police headquarters.

Shamsuddin was there together with other leaders and members of the coalition, which claims to represent more than 25 NGOs in Selangor, to lodge a police report against the man.

Also present were leaders from Selangor Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) and Selangor 99 Kesan Welfare Society, who also lodged reports over the matter.

Shamsuddin said the authorities must launch an investigation against the man immediately to prevent the issue from creating unrest in the country.

Meanwhile, coalition chairman Nazilah Idris said the government should bring back the Internal Security Act (ISA).

She said this was necessary to curtail the problem of irresponsible individuals who had been making fun of sensitive issues of late.

“Only ISA would be able to prevent such activities like sedition, terrorism and deviant teaching, which can threaten national security,” she said.
