Three feared drowned in two separate incidents in Sarawak

SRI AMAN: Three people including a Year 6 pupil have been reported missing and feared drowned in two separate incidents today.

Two of the three victims were reported missing when the longboat they were travelling in with three others capsized near the Batang Ai hydroelectric plant in Lubok Antu.

A State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said rescuers were notified over the incident by the Lubok Antu police station at about 6pm.

“The incident occurred when the longboat flipped due to bad weather.

“Three of the longboat passengers managed to rescue themselves while two others are still missing,” said the spokesman.

The spokesman, however, was unable to disclose the identities of the missing persons as operation are ongoing.

About six hours earlier, a 12-year-old boy was reported missing when he was believed to have fallen into the river near the Sungai Binatang wharf in Bintangor, near Sarikei.

The spokesman said the incident occurred during the Bintangor Orange Festival. The missing victim has been identified as Wong Khoon Yung.

“The search and rescue mission, which ended at 6.35pm, will resume tomorrow,” said the spokesman.
