Mohd Yusof Apdal's remand extended until Monday

KOTA KINABALU: The remand of Lahad Datu assemblyman Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal was extended today to assist the ongoing probe over misappropriation of RM1.5 billion federal funds for Sabah rural development projects.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus granted the remand extension application by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The remand was extended until Monday.

Yusof, 57, who is the younger brother of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, was represented by counsel Edward Paul and Peter Lee.

The Silam Umno chief remained calm as he was taken out of the magistrate's court but flashed a smile to his family and some 100 Umno members outside the court compound.

He was seen raising his hands and giving a peace sign to the supporters, some of whom were dressed in red t-shirts.

Speaking to the New Straits Times briefly, Yusof, while being whisked to MACC vehicle, said: "I am fine. Everythig is fine and there's no problem. "

Earlier, Yusof was greeted with cheers from his supporters as he alighted from the car after arriving at the courthouse at noon.

Once in a while, he turned to his supporters, nodding and smiling.

He was detained on Oct 17 after giving his statement at the Sabah MACC office here, and was remanded the next day. His remand ended today.

Deputy public prosecutor Rustam Anip and prosecuting officer Mohd Faliq Basirudin appeared for MACC.

In updating Yusof's health condition, Faliq said he was suffering from piles but the commission had taken him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical check-up.

"The doctor has given the neccesary medication and there was no need for him to be warded as Yusof was fit to stay at the MACC lock-up," he said.

He also said Shafie was warded at the hospital and rubbished claims that the Warisan top leader would be charged on Monday.

Yesterday, Shafie was remanded for four days to assist MACC graft probe.

Yusof and Shafie are expected to go to court on Monday.
