AGC will not be involved in investigating allegations against MACC chief

KUALA NERUS: The taskforce set up by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) will guide the police team investigating the allegations involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad.

Attorney General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali said today that the AGC would not be involved in the investigation because it was not its job but that of the police.

“We will monitor the investigations and if there is any wrong doing we will give specific guidelines to ensure that the truth prevails. The AG’s taskforce is internal and we set it up because the allegations touch on the integrity of the MACC.

“We are looking for the truth. And we are leaving it to the police to conduct investigations, including recording statements and visiting sites (as projected in the video),” he told reporters after receiving the Honorary Doctorate of Law in conjunction with Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin’s 9th convocation.

Asked if there had been any development since the taskforce was formed three days ago, Apandi said so far there had been no development.

“Let the police do their job. If the allegation was false then we have laws to deal with it. The taskforce will monitor the investigation and provide guidelines like all other police cases nationwide.

“The taskforce led by the head of the prosecution division will report to me,” he said.

On the Honorary Doctorate of Law from UniSZA, Apandi said he was happy with the award because it brought back memories of his six years as magistrate and deputy public prosecutor in Terengganu.

Apandi said students should not give up in their pursuit of academic excellence and advancement in their careers despite facing obstacles that may derail them from moving forward.

"You are bound to face obstacles but you must pick yourself up and never give up. If you give up you will be admitting defeat," said Apandi who has 44 years of experience in the legal profession.

He said he had faced many obstacles in his long career as a lawyer and judge, and each time he fell he would pick himself up and never admit defeat.

“You are bound to face failures but it is not the end. But if you fail and decide not to continue with the path that you have chosen then you will have admitted defeat. If you rise after falling then that is victory,” he added.
