Report claims of corruption if you have proof, says Penang Island City Council mayor

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has asked those who have claimed there was an element of corruption in the approval of the affordable housing project at Lengkok Lembah Permai in Tanjung Bunga here, to report the matter to the authorities.

Mayor Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif said they should report the matter if they have proof.

“I am not sure (to such claims of corruption) but I want to stress that approval was granted sincerely.

“We carry out our duties with integrity but you have proof otherwise, report the matter,” she said when asked to comment on the claims.

Maimunah also denied claims that the MBPP approved hillslope development projects easily.

“Every approval goes through stringent and detailed processes. It will also be referred to no less that 22 technical departments.

“After that, it will be brought to the one-stop centre for consideration prior to approval,” she addded.

As such, Maimunah stressed that everything was done according to the stipulated laws.

Asked if the affordable housing project’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) showed it was built on an unsafe hillslope, she said she would check the matter before commenting.

The project received its planning approval on Feb 10, 2015 and its building plan approval on May 19 the same year.

To another question on whether the developer would be fined, she said it would depend on the outcome of the Commission of Inquiry investigation.
