(Update) YTL founder Yeoh Tiong Lay laid to rest; thousands pay last respects at his final journey

NILAI: Thousands of people, from far and near, paid their last respects to the founder and executive chairman of YTL Corporation Bhd, Tan Sri Dr Yeoh Tiong Lay at his funeral here today.

His remains, which left the YTL Residence in Damansara Heights around 1pm, were laid to rest at the Nilai Memorial Park here.

Family members, close friends and staff of the YTL Corporation paid their last respects by joining in the funeral procession which began at the YTL Residence and passed through Sentul, Jalan Tun Razak, and past the main office of YTL Corporation in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

The staff of the YTL Corporation had also lined up in front of commercial landmarks in Bukit Bintang to observe the passing of the cortege.

Earlier today, the family members of Yeoh had jointly donated RM8 million to 50 different organisations, schools and associations in his honour.

His eldest son, Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh said the donations served to commemorate his passing and honour his memory by remembering his philanthropic spirit.

“We believe that the donations are a natural extension of my father’s legacy.

“He was always passionate about philanthropy and devoted much of his time to serving many of these organisations.

“Supporting education had always been very close to his heart as he wanted everyone to have access to the higher education that he wasn’t able to receive,” Francis said.

Present at the funeral service included Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, IOI Group’s founder and executive chairman Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng, Lion Group Malaysia chairman Tan Sri William Cheng, Top Glove founder and chairman Tan Sri Lim Wee Chai, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian and Sunsuria Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri Ter Leong Yap.

Tiong Lay, who died on Wednesday was survived by his wife, Puan Sri Datin Seri Tan Kai Yong, his seven children, Francis, Datuk Yeoh Soo Min, Datuk Dr Victor Yeoh Seok Kian, Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong, Datuk Seri Michael Yeoh Sock Siong, Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng, Datuk Mark Yeoh Seok Kah, 27 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
