Legendary 'Raja Gelek' M. Daud Kilau buried

BAGAN DATUK: "Raja Gelek" Datuk M. Daud Kilau was laid to rest at the Kampung Sungai Balai Baroh Muslim cemetery here today.

The remains of the legendary singer arrived at the Tuminah Hamidi mosque at 9.17am for final rites.

Prayers were performed by the imam, Zulfadil Ismail, about 1.40pm after Zohor, with about 400 people in attendance.

Daud Kilau's remains was then taken to the cemetery, arriving about 1.55pm and were laid to rest at 2.30pm.

A solemn atmosphere hung in the air around the cemetery where about 200 relatives, friends and fans had gathered to pay their last respects.

National Artiste Foundation of Malaysia (YKAT) president Datuk DJ Dave said the nation's arts industry had lost an irreplaceable talent.

"He and I have known each other for 50 years. We often shared a stage.

"When he was active (in the industry), he liked to sew his own sequined costumes while he was backstage. He would finish it, too.

"Even though he could have used other costumes, he was committed to giving his fans the best.

"For the past three years, YKAT has been giving him RM500 a month to show our appreciation for his contributions to the industry," he said.

The 85-year-old Daud Kilau breathed his last yesterday at 4.46pm while receiving treatment at the Teluk Intan Hospital.
