Posters questioning party responsible for Tanjung Bungah landslide appear around Penang island

GEORGE TOWN: Several posters, asking "Who is the murderer?" following Saturday's deadly Tanjung Bungah landslide have been spotted across the island.

The posters, printed in three major languages – Bahasa Malaysia, English and Chinese – with the headline Tanjung Bungah landslide, were spotted by Netizens, who have shared photos of the posters on Facebook.

The said poster listed four parties responsible – Pakatan Harapan, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), the developer or an act of God.

It is not immediately known who is responsible for putting up the posters.

Checks by the New Straits Times showed the posters were up in several public places this afternoon, including Jelutong.

It was subsequently taken down by the MBPP.

Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi, who was alerted to it, said the people, particularly all politicians, should refrain from playing up the tragedy by making unwarranted comments.

He said now that the three-man state-level Commission of Inquiry has been set up and its panel members, comprising industry experts had been made known, and their scope of investigations defined, they should be allowed to do their job.

"Everybody should resist from making any unsubstantiated claims until the report is out.

"If it involves professional negligence or dereliction of duty on the part of the MBPP's one-stop-centre or the developer, the report will unearth all truths and stern action will be taken accordingly.

"The loss of 11 lives must be accounted for but politicians are not competent in carrying out this task. It is a task for the trained experts, not politicians and any political parties," he said.

Ooi also added that non-governmental organisations (NGO) should also refrain from making premature comments until the report of the inquiry is made known to the public.
