Penang govt cannot be responsible for Penang House of Music's situation

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government welcomes any interest in assisting the Penang House of Music, which is set to close its doors on Saturday.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said it was possible that the Penang House of Music would remain here or relocate elsewhere.

He said that the state had done its part by allocating RM500,000 annually to the Penang House of Music.

"We have been giving substantial grants to assist them, whenever possible. They can use the money the best way possible, including for rental.

"However, I believe the revenue generated is insufficient to operate the Penang House of Music, leaving them in the condition they are currently in," he told newsmen in Komtar here today.

He was asked about the various quarters who had voiced interest in helping the Penang House of Music.

It was reported that the Penang House of Music, which opened seven years ago as a repository of the state's musical heritage, would close down soon.

The lack of financial and institutional support had made it a little too difficult to continue.

Chow said the Penang House of Music, being a business, should deal with its issues and take the necessary actions.

"We can only help so much. The state cannot be responsible," he added.
