PM tucks into authentic Kuala Kedah dishes at popular Kedah stall

ALOR STAR: It was a pleasant surprise for Siti Rohani Mohd Nor when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak chose to have breakfast at her 'Gulai Ikan Meletup' stall in Kampung Seberang Kota here this morning.

The 48-year-old vendor served Najib a variety of local Kuala Kedah dishes, including gulai ikan temenung (mackerel curry), 'ulam' (herbs), crispy fried squid and sambal belacan.

Siti Rohani topped her offerings with the hard-to-come-by 'ikan temenung buang tulang goreng' (fried boneless mackerel).

She said she was excited and nervous at the same time when she learnt a few days ago that the Prime Minister would visit her humble stall.

Siti Rohani and her staff began preparing Najib’s meal at 4am today, as well as for around 1,500 people who had visited her stall for a glimpse of the Prime Minister.

"This was originally my mother's stall. I just took over the business about two years ago, but never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be serving the country's top leader," she said.

Meanwhile, Shafie Mat Isa, 63, and some 2,000 villagers gathered as early as 7.30am to witness the Prime Minister patronising the popular stall.

Shafie said he has been waiting for the opportunity to see the country's leader in person for so long.

"I have been waiting here since after Subuh prayer so that I could have the chance to be as close as I could to Datuk Seri. Alhamdulillah, at last my wish to see him up close has finally come true," he said.
