Police to probe Perak assemblyman over attack on woman

IPOH: Police will further investigate the case of an assemblyman who allegedly beat a woman at the end of last month.

Ipoh district police chief, ACP Mohd Ali Tamby said so far police had received five reports by political party leaders and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on the matter.

“The investigation will go on even though the woman who was allegedly beaten had withdrawn the police report she made,” he said in a statement, here, today.

The opposition party assemblyman was accused of punching the woman on her cheek after a misunderstanding apart from taking money and personal items belonging to the woman.

Meanwhile, Perak MyPPP Youth chief, Mohamed Nor Fadhzil Sahul Hamid and two NGO members lodged a report at the Sungai Senam police station here today on the matter which has gone viral on social sites since yesterday.

When met by reporters, Nor Fadhzil urged the authorities to investigate whether the allegation was true or otherwise.

“This is a barbaric action and should not have been made by an assemblyman. Punching a woman does not reflect well on one who is an elected representative.

“We are also telling DAP to explain the matter and if the incident is true, action should be taken against the assemblyman,” he said. - Bernama
